REPORTER: “You said [Trump] faced an unprecedented situation!”
BARR: “Well, is there another precedent for it?
REPORTER: “Well… no.”
BARR: [duh…]

Attorney General William Barr defended his handling of the release of the Mueller report Thursday, dismissing criticism that he was acting as if he were President Trump’s personal attorney. CBS correspondent Paula Reid confronted him at his press conference by mentioning the criticism that his handling of the report roll-out has been overly defensive of Trump.
Reid asked; “What do you say to people on both sides of the aisle concerned you are trying to protect the president?”
Reid said that Barr was “generous” to Trump in his interpretation of the instances of potential obstruction of justice identified in the report by special counsel Robert Mueller. She specifically questioned his comment that Trump behaved as he did in part because he faced an “unprecedented” situation and that he acted out of anger and frustration rather than a desire to obstruct justice.
The mainstream media and Democrats nonetheless are calling it a cover-up, despite the fact that the White House made no requests for, and made no redactions. This didn’t stop Mad Maxine from repeating her views she developed years ago:
The California Democrat trashed the attorney general Wednesday night on the eve of Special Counsel Mueller’s report being released to the public, calling Barr “a lackey and a sycophant” for President Trump.
“I never expected Barr to do anything that would be respectful to the members of Congress or to include us in any real way,” she told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, joining colleagues fuming over the decision by Barr to hold a press conference before releasing a redacted version of the report.
Barr declared Wednesday he thinks “spying did occur” against Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, suggesting the origins of the Russia investigation may have been mishandled in remarks that aligned him with the president at a time when Barr’s independence is under scrutiny.
Barr, appearing before a Senate panel, did not say what “spying” may have taken place but seemed to be alluding to a surveillance warrant the FBI obtained on a former Trump associate. He later said he wasn’t sure there had been improper surveillance but wanted to make sure proper procedures were followed. Still, his remarks give a boost to Trump and his supporters who insist his 2016 campaign was unfairly targeted by the FBI.
