As the Philadelphia police department struggled to contain a standoff situation with an armed suspect, you’ll witness below some Philadelphia residents in the area could be seen lobbing trash or other projectiles at law enforcement and taunt them while they’re doing their job protecting said citizens.

Who is responsible for this uptick in brazen public violence toward police? Video captured a crowd taunting police officers even as a standoff that had already wounded six officers continued nearby.

For several hours, gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and police. “When they started dumping with the firepower and stuff like that, they did it in front of the day care, the babies were out and everything, that’s crazy. I’m a discharged veteran. I thought I was in a DMZ zone. It’s triggering PTSD, all types of things, all of this needs to be resolved. It’s senseless, seriously senseless,” a bystander said.

In a video posted by Breaking911, one woman can be seen shoving an officer from behind as he passes through the crowd. Others in the crowd yell and throw objects at police as they enter the blocked off area amid the active standoff scene.

Area residents also shoved the police officers, confronted them in an aggressive fashion, and lobbed objects at officers.

Several officers with the Narcotics Strike Force were serving a warrant at the multifamily home — in connection with what may have been a drug-related offense — when things “went awry almost immediately,” and the shooter opened fire, Police Commissioner Richard Ross Jr. said.

The dramatic shootout in Philadelphia stretched on for more than eight hours as six officers were shot. Two officers were trapped on the second floor of the building as the gunman shot through the first-floor ceiling and outside at responding law enforcement.

CBS reporter Alexandria Hoff was on the scene to cover the shooting and noted her disappointment at seeing officers harassed while they attempted to do their jobs. “I mentioned this at 10 and since I was harassed during that live shot, I’ll mention it here too. A major moment of disappointment this evening was watching a crowd of people taunt police officers, laughing and yelling at them in the midst of the gunfire,” she tweeted.

Thankfully, all of the officers who were injured during the standoff have been released from the hospital.

After withstanding more than five hours of gunfire, SWAT officers managed to get the two officers and three hostages out of the residence safely. The gunman eventually surrendered just after midnight Thursday, exiting the residence with his hands in the air and with a police light shining on him, surrounded by a cloud of tear gas.
