Despite the negative effects on employment in other cities, the Los Angeles City Council voted 13 to 1 raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Even though a second procedural vote is needed because it wasn’t unanimous, Council president Herb Wesson said final passage was all but certain.
Officials in West Hollywood and Santa Monica say they plan to pursue their own minimum wage hikes and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is set to consider its own set of increases for unincorporated areas of LA County. The big question is whether this is for procuring votes or is the increase based on solid economics?
My buddy Steve Pinto has been in the manufacturing sector in Los Angeles for over 30 years. He’s seen it all and is extremely successful – as are his employees. I’ve known Steve since we attended college together and I can tell you he is neither a died in the wool Republican or Democrat.
He’s a businessman. An honest guy who hires, trains, employs and pays people wages for their labor.

Subject: Min Wage: we will eliminate jobs
Dear Mayor,
I run a company that manufactures factory automation equipment. Our plant is just south of Compton.
We are developing a new product line, and there is a question of how much of the manufacturing for that line will be done here and how much will be done overseas.
The passage of the $15 minimum wage has answered the question: overseas. We will eliminate 6 to 8 jobs here as a result.
In addition, we will review our automation projects, setting new barriers. A higher minimum wage makes automation cheaper by comparison. I expect to eliminate another 15 to 20 jobs over the next two years as a result.
Not many people at my company make less than $15 per hour now, but those who are close will no longer accept their wage when a teenager at McDonalds makes almost the same amount.
Our margins are too thin for us to carry the burden of too many socialist programs. I love California, and I love the people who work at my company. Our government is making it difficult to continue here. I hope the people who we lay off will be able to find interesting, well-paid jobs. I fear they won’t, and I am deeply sorry for it.

Of course, politicians want to curry favor with the “working poor,” encouraging them to continue to vote for Democrats, who run the city of Los Angeles and enjoy a huge majority in California’s State Legislature in Sacramento.
Sadly, it is the “working poor” who will be paying the price for this government intrusion.
Next time someone screams about the minimum wage and income inequality, let them know the only ones getting healthier by minimun wage increases are overseas workers. This is happening all over California and similar labor politics have all but destroyed once fabulous places to live such as Toledo, Pittsburg and Detroit.
Seattle, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles are on the same path now, thanks to Democrats and their socialist nature. It’s sad that politicians are able to fool people into believing these policies will help the worker, when they result in the exact opposite. And don’t get myself or Steve Pinto started on how this affects minorities disproportionately .

Entire swaths of South Central Los Angeles neighborhoods regularty reject the development of business by pandering politicians and the existing firms are taxed and regulated until they leave for Texas, Florida or China.
The answer is not artificially setting wage levels – it’s voting in pro-business politicians who know that a good job is the only welfare anyone in America ever needed. If you agree – or understand what my man Pinto is saying here – why not send an email to the Mayor or council person in your town?
